ONE was commissioned by the main contractor, adi Building & Refurbishment, to design a new 400 space car park for Princes Group’s largest food production site in the U.K. at Long Sutton, Lincolnshire.

This new 12,600m² staff car park is located in rural Lincolnshire on an incredibly flat site adjacent to the current factory on low-lying grassland so drainage was a key consideration. The detailed design utilised favourable ground conditions to allow storm water to infiltrate into the underlying soils. The team added value by removing plastic attenuation tanks in lieu of a permeable stone blanket covered with a high level overflow into the existing field ditch for times of extreme rainfall.
The team provided engineering drawings including a Section 184 Agreement to Lincolnshire County Council for modifications to the existing highways to facilitate safe passage for users from the car park to the main building. The new car park, which utilised the client’s preferred choice of sustainable materials, was successfully handed over at the end of June 2019.
This project freed up the existing car park for the 12,389m² extension to the food processing facility which ONE’s architects and civil and structural engineers were undertaking detailed design as part of the same commission.
The team always work to provide best value right from the start of any project. We understand that a lot of money is spent on risk – this can be mitigated by alternative thinking and approaches with projects, for example, the Bod Pave choice greatly reduced cost against other possible car park materials.
By utilising infiltration drainage and permeable stone blankets it reduced the risk of flooding as it delays the water’s journey to the watercourse and helps recharge groundwater.
