Moorside is a proposed Nuclear Power Station located in Cumbria just outside the Lake District National Park. As part of the project’s future development, NuGen launched an international design competition through the Landscape Institute. The competition was for the design of important elements and features of the landscape around the proposed power station, to create a destination for NuGen and to visually integrate the proposed development into the surrounding rural character.
Additionally the brief was for the landscape to accommodate 13 million cubic metres of excavated material, creating significant earth mounding and bunds to the north and south of the Power Station. One’s competition entry has been shortlisted to the top five preferred proposals. The winning design will go on to be developed as part of a future landscape masterplan, with the mounds forming an integral part of the setting of Moorside Power Station.

Landscape Architecture,
ONE Creative environments was inspired by nuclear fission, energy and nature and used these ideas to develop a landscape design for NuGen. The massive earthworks were designed as a dynamic representation of the splitting of atoms, energy and particle trails. The aspiration for the landscape was to create a magical and inspirational destination for all sitting harmoniously alongside the NuGen.
The proposal is for an outdoor science park which focuses on education through a world of play and discovery. Using natural forces such as sunlight, wind and gravity, a series of Learning Zones are located across the earthworks. Discovery Park creates a compelling visitor attraction that celebrates NuGen’s advancement of safe nuclear science and power. At the heart of the site the visitors’ centre is housed in the largest mound and provides access to the viewing platforms over the reactors. An inspirational art installation forms the focal feature of the site and is to the top of this mound. The art feature will generate a rainbow which is visible for miles and create a spectacle and hundreds of smaller scattered prisms will cover the hillside in colourful light.
