ONE Creative environments (ONE) is a finalist in the Excellence in Place Regeneration category at the 2021 Landscape Institute awards.
ONE’s design for the Bird Box in Bromsgrove town centre, was delivered on a challenging budget, but has transformed the unused site on St John’s Street into a public realm and mixed-use community destination which is bringing a hive of activity into this central location.
Named after a feature carved into many of the existing Bromsgrove shopfronts, the Bird Box was designed to provide a flexible space for ‘pop-up’ and mobile businesses giving opportunities and support to start-ups and local entrepreneurs. It includes a range of community facilities: a stage, creative seating and open areas which during COVID-19 is providing outdoor social distancing space for small retail outlets as well as enabling a range of open-air events.
Bold graphics are combined with a leafy green environment. A project that has strong environmental credentials, almost everything that was on site has been re-used or recycled.
Ruth Sears, Associate Architect at ONE, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised as a finalist in these prestigious awards. The Bird Box has been very well received and it is brilliant to see local people and businesses enjoying this space since it has been transformed.”
Mark Martin, Director of ONE, added: “It is always fantastic when our designs are recognised by industry awards and in this case to receive recognition from the professional body that professional landscape architects are accredited to. Thank you to everyone who made The Bird Box possible and congratulations to all finalists.”
The Bird Box was designed by ONE Creative environments (ONE) on behalf of North Worcestershire Economic Development and Regeneration (NWedR) and Bromsgrove District Council. ONE worked closely with all parties to deliver the design alongside other local companies: the contractors Kelbec Civils Limited and Whiting Landscape.
This highly successful project has already been recognised in other prestigious awards including: the Festival of Place Pineapple awards where it was a finalist as an Activation Project and the Constructing Excellence West Midlands’ Awards in the Conservation and Rejuvenation category.
The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 25 November 2021. The finalists have been announced here and further details about the awards are available here.
