Five Minutes with ONE’s Engineering Team – Marcus Spencer
Posted: 7 April 2021
ONE’s engineering expertise delivers efficient, sustainable and innovative solutions.
At ONE we have a fantastic team of engineers which includes: civil and structural engineering and building services (mechanical and electrical engineering). The team has been recognised in industry awards and our clients can trust them to overcome any challenges, ensure compliance and find the best possible solutions – saving some clients hundreds of thousands of pounds.
So who are our engineers? You can meet the team here. You will see the usual corporate shot, but at ONE we believe in making the journey fun and you will get a bit of an insight into their interests outside work too.
You can also find out more about our Engineering Technical Directors as we spend five minutes with each of them to find out what makes them tick. Why not get in touch about your project – it would be great to hear from you.
The first in the series is Marcus Spencer – Technical Director, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (Building Services).
What inspired you to take up engineering?
I come from an Engineering family. My grandfather owned a company making Baily Bridges during WW2 and my father was a toolmaker for an engineering company. I’ve been brought up around mechanical engineering so going slightly off course to electrical engineering seemed logical, enjoyable and satisfying, and it has been.
What has been the biggest achievement in your career?
Being involved with so many interesting and varied projects that will be around for many years. My achievement is leaving a legacy of projects that contributed towards a better built environment.
What is important in the industry right now?
Apart for Digital Engineering and the impact it has through the industry, for me bringing new talent into the industry is key. I’m a keen advocate of apprenticeships and always on the lookout for enthusiastic people to join the team here at ONE.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island, what three things would you take?
Sunscreen, hat and water. I am an engineer after all so all logical items!
What is the greatest sport in your opinion?
Chariot racing, Ben Hur was a great film.
What is your favourite book, film or box set?
Band of Brothers Box set. I love WW2 history, the greatest generation.
What is the one object you could not live without?
I’m not really a materialistic person, I’m more about experiences but I could not live without my wife, she’s the best and without her I would not be the person I am.
What are you looking forward to in a post COVID-19 world?
Going out for a meal, had enough of deliveries!
