Tussac House Officially Opens on the Falkland Islands – A Milestone in Innovative Care Facility Design

Posted: 12 March 2025

ONE Creative environments (ONE) was proud to attend the official opening of Tussac House, a state-of-the-art care facility on the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, which has been designed by their multi-disciplinary team.

This pioneering development, which is the first purpose-built extra care facility in the Falklands, sets a new benchmark for healthcare and assisted living for the islands, providing a high-quality environment tailored to the needs of its residents.

Tussac House was commissioned by the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) to enhance the provision of care for the elderly and those with additional needs. ONE’s multi-disciplinary team has worked closely with stakeholders to create an innovative, sustainable, and future-proof facility that prioritises comfort and wellbeing, accessibility and community integration.

Positioned on the coast of Stanley Harbour overlooking The Narrows, the design of Tussac House reflects a deep understanding of the local environment, incorporates sustainable principles with efficient low energy solutions, and provides a welcoming environment for residents, staff and visitors.

The new 3600m² single storey care facility includes thoughtfully designed living spaces to promote wellbeing, maximising the number of apartments with a sea view while incorporating assistive technology, accessibility considerations and dementia-friendly design. The layout of the complex has been designed to create a ‘village feel’, where users feel safe and connected, with access to several communal areas and highly attractive landscaped outdoor spaces, all designed with a wandering loop to safely guide residents and contribute to an enhanced quality of life.

The official opening ceremony, which was held on 11th March, included a formal ribbon cutting and was attended by key FIG officials, healthcare professionals, and residents of Tussac House, marking an important milestone in the development of healthcare infrastructure on the islands.

Craig Walding, Director at ONE and their Architectural Lead in the Falkland Islands, said: “This has been an incredible project working with a fantastic team on the islands.”

“The design of Tussac House works in harmony with the local area while maximising the well-being potential of this wonderful location with stunning views across the harbour, beautifully landscaped external spaces as well as a highly sustainable, accessible new care facility.”

“It has been a privilege to have delivered this project that will provide care and comfort for the islands’ local community now and for future generations.”

MLA John Birmingham, portfolio holder for Health and Social Services, said: “The official opening of Tussac House is a milestone in the progress of services provided to our community. It’s a day when we can all be optimistic about the future services that will be provided not only on-site here in Tussac House, but also as the hub of all things connected to care in the community”.
